Merck Funds Garey Project to Pinpoint Direct Costs of Recurrent, Hospital-acquired C. difficile Infections

GareyAssociate Professor Kevin W. Garey, Pharm.D., M.S., has received a three-year, $190,750 grant from Merck & Co. to pinpoint the direct medical and non-medical costs of recurrent, health system-acquired Clostridium difficile infection (CDI), including infections caused by the hypervirulent "BI/NAP" strain blamed for outbreaks at several hospitals in the U.S. and Canada. The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention estimates the annual incidence of CDI at more than 250,000 cases, with a patient mortality rate of up to 5 percent. Garey said he expects the multi-institutional study will result in more comprehensive cost data to assist health-policy makers in analyzing the effectiveness of novel or high-cost therapies for CDI, which typically involves longer hospital stays and/or re-hospitalization due to recurrence of the infection.
