Alumna Wins ISPOR Podium Presentation Award for
Comparative Study on Bipolar Disorder Therapies


Sonam MehtaUH Pharmacy Administration alumna Sonam Mehta, M.S. ('11), outcomes research analyst at Pharmerit North America in Bethesda, Md., earned one of three Best New Investigator Podium Research Presentation awards at the International Society of Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR) 17th Annual International Meeting in Washington, D.C., June 2-6. Mehta's presentation, "Comparative effectiveness of monotherapy with mood stabilizers versus atypical antipsychotics for the treatment of bipolar disorder in children and adolescents: A retrospective claims-data study," was based on work conducted as part of her master's thesis at UHCOP. Pharmacy Administration Team Finishes Second
in Research Competition at International Meeting


For the second consecutive year, a UH College of Pharmacy team of Pharmacy Administration graduate students finished in second place in the quiz bowl-style Student Research Competition at the ISPOR 17th Annual International Meeting in Washington, D.C., June 2-6. A total of 15 teams from across the U.S. competed in the event, with the UHCOP team of Harshali Patel, Nilanjana Dwibedi, Parul Gupta and Sneha Sura besting last year's champions in the first round. In other news from ISPOR, UH students and faculty delivered 34 poster and three podium presentations (with five UHCOP posters recognized as finalists for Best Student Poster Awards).

Garey Achieves Prestigious Fellow Status in
American Society of Health-System Pharmacists


GareyUH College of Pharmacy's Kevin W. Garey, Pharm.D., M.S., associate professor and chair of the Department of Clinical Sciences & Administration, was one of 30 health-system pharmacists to be honored as Fellows of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists June 12 during the organization's annual meeting in Baltimore, Md. The ASHP Practitioner Recognition Program recognizes excellence in practice and promotes public awareness of outstanding pharmacists based on their contributions to the scientific literature, research, education, and active involvement and leadership in professional activities. The program has recognized 720 Fellows since it began in 1988.

Pharmacology Student Wins Best Poster Award
at Gulf Coast Consortia's Lung Research Day


Vaidehi ThanawalaPharmacology graduate student Vaidehi Thanawala won the Best Poster Award at the Gulf Coast Consortia-sponsored Lung Research Day: Collaborative Research Alliances for the Cure of Lung Diseases workshop June 21 in Houston. Thanawala's project, entitled "Epinephrine is Required for Airway Inflammatory Cell Infiltration and Airway Hyper-responsiveness in Murine Models of Asthma," was selected from more than 40 abstracts presented by undergraduate and graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and faculty members from GCC member institutions.

College Honors Student, Preceptor Excellence at Class of 2012 Graduation Awards Reception


UH College of Pharmacy recently recognized student and preceptor excellence for the 2011-12 academic year at the college's Class of 2012 Graduation Reception. Recipients of this year's preceptor awards were: Sandra Aubert, Walgreens Pharmacy - Community Preceptor of the Year; Allison Torregrossa, Quentin Mease Pharmacy/Harris County Hospital District - Clinical Preceptor of the Year Award; St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital - Health Systems Site of the Year; and Kim Birtcher - Faculty Preceptor of the Year. Golf Classic Players, Sponsors Raise $5,000
in Student Educational, Travel Assistance


UH College of Pharmacy welcomed nearly 60 golfers and more than two dozen sponsors to the college’s new annual golf tournament – the UHCOP Golf Classic – on June 4 at Houston’s Wildcat Golf Club. The tournament raised approximately $5,000 in proceeds designated for Pharm.D. student educational assistance and travel awards. To read the full story, click here.
