Alumni Hardin-Oliver, Aguilera Among Candidates for TPA Leadership Posts

hardin-oliver-aguilera.jpgUH College of Pharmacy alumni and Dean's Advisory Council members Carole Hardin-Oliver, R.Ph. (B.S. '83), and Lydia Aguilera, Pharm.D., R.Ph. (B.S. '80), are running for President-elect and Vice President, respectively, of the Texas Pharmacy Association. Hardin-Oliver is the Houston District 16 pharmacy supervisor for Walgreens and Aguilera serves as Interim Director of the University of Texas-Pan American Cooperative Pharmacy Program in Edinburg. Online voting for TPA members runs through midnight Aug. 15; candidate statements are available for download from the TPA website.

UH SNPhA Chapter, Members Win National Elections, Awards at Conference

jean-garcia.jpgUH Pharm.D. students Danny Jean and Diana Garcia were elected National Vice President and Regional Facilitator (Region 4), respectively, of the Student National Pharmaceutical Association at the organization's National Conference in July. Other  individual and chapter honors included: Bobbie Quach, first place in the Remember the Ribbon HIV/AIDS Project competition; second place in the Chapter Scrapbook competition (assembled by historian Ashley Tran); and finalists for Chapter of the Year awards in the national, regional and "large school" categories.

UH Students Tie for Second Place in Patient Counseling Competition at TPA Meeting

beatty-ochugbu.jpgTwo UHCOP students -- Collin Beatty and Otsansya Ochugbu -- tied for second place in the Academy of Student Pharmacists' Patient Counseling Competition at the 2012 Texas Pharmacy Association Rxperts Annual Conference & Expo in The Woodlands in July. Each college of pharmacy in Texas was allowed to field up to three competitors, with UHCOP's Andrew Morris rounding out the college's contingent. In addition to recognizing the second-place finalists, TPA judges awarded one first-place winner and three third-place finishers.

Bikram Awarded U.S. Patent for Cancer Diagnostic, Therapeutic Nanoparticle

bikram.jpgMalavosklish "Liz" Bikram, Ph.D., assistant professor of pharmaceutics, has received a U.S. patent for an iron-oxide nanoparticle designed to enhance the diagnostic imaging of tumors and deliver anti-tumor gene therapies. Bikram developed the dual function nanoparticle as a biomimetic contrast agent for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) diagnostics and gene delivery system to target early stage and metastatic cancers. Bikram said the ultrasmall paramagnetic nanoparticle platform offers opportunities for broad application in cancer diagnoses and care, especially in detecting and treating ovarian and breast cancers.

Williams Earns National Recognition
from SNPhA, Kappa Psi Fraternity

WilliamsLouis Williams, Ph.D., associate professor, has received national recognition from the Student National Pharmaceutical Association and the Kappa Psi pharmaceutical fraternity. Faculty advisor for the UH chapters of both organizations, Williams was one of only four chapter advisors among SNPhA's nearly 80 chapters nationwide to be honored at the 2012 SNPhA National Conference in July and one of 10 chapter advisors from among Kappa Psi's 80-plus collegiate chapters to earn a 2012 Grand Council Deputy Certificate of Excellence.
