UH Takes 1st Runner-up for NCPA Chapter of Year, Individual Members Honored 

clay-stifter-web.jpgThe UH Chapter of the National Community Pharmacists Association advanced to First Runner-up in their bid for National Chapter of the Year honors at the 114th Annual NCPA Convention and Trade Exposition Oct. 13-17 in San Diego. In addition, UH's Danielle Stifter was recognized among the Outstanding Chapter Members of the Year and Bobby Clay, a 2011 Outstanding Chapter Member who serves alongside fellow Cougar and National President on the National Student Leadership Council, received a national Presidential Scholarship from the NCPA Foundation.

Garey Gains National Recognition for Paper, Expertise in C.diff. Infection and Treatment

garey12-webKevin W. Garey, Pharm.D., M.S., FASHP, associate professor and chair of the Department of Clinical Sciences and Administration, continues to gain national recognition for his research expertise on Clostridium difficile infection (CDI). In September, Garey was honored with the Impact Paper of the Year by the Society of Infectious Disease Pharmacists for a 2011 report published in the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy. The article detailed a randomized, double-blind pilot study conducted by Garey and his colleagues into the effectiveness of using a rifaximin "chaser" following standard anti-CDI antibiotic therapy to prevent recurrent diarrhea in patients.

Alumni Earn TPA Leadership Positions,
PharmPAC Member of the Year Award

hardin-oliver-aguilera.jpgTwo UH College of Pharmacy alumni and Dean's Advisory Council members -- Carole Hardin-Oliver, R.Ph. (B.S. '83), and Lydia Aguilera, Pharm.D., R.Ph. (B.S. '80) -- have taken on new leadership roles in the Texas Pharmacy Association. Hardin-Oliver, the Houston District 16 pharmacy supervisor for Walgreens, was elected TPA President-elect and Aguilera, interim director of the University of Texas-Pan American Cooperative Pharmacy Program in Edinburg, was appointed to fill a vacant seat on the Board of Directors. In addition, alumnus Richie Ray, R.Ph. (B.S. '96), president/CEO and pharmacist-in-charge of Richie's Specialty Pharmacy in Conroe, was named the 2012 PharmPAC Member of the Year.

College Welcomes New, Returning Faculty

UH College of Pharmacy recently welcomed three new faculty members in the Department of Clinical Sciences and Administration: alumna Julianna Fernandez, Pharm.D. ('06), BCPS, clinical assistant professor with a geriatrics practice site at The Methodist Hospital; Marc Fleming, Ph.D., M.P.H., R.Ph., assistant professor of pharmacy administration; and Matthew Wanat, Pharm.D., BCPS, clinical assistant professor with a critical care practice site at the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The college also welcomed back Tahir Hussain, Ph.D., professor of pharmacology, who recently returned to Houston and UHCOP for family reasons after a year at Auburn University.

ASHP Visiting Leaders Program Brings Pharmacy Visionary David Zilz to Houston

zilz-webUH College of Pharmacy was among the institutions selected to participate in the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists' resident-centric Visiting Leaders Program, which brought pharmacy legend David A. Zilz, R.Ph., M.S., FASHP, to Houston over two days in September. Currently serving as senior consultant of Corporate Pharmacy Programs for the University of Wisconsin Health Systems and Hospitals & Clinics, Zilz is professor emeritus of the UW School of Pharmacy in Madison, Wisc., a past president of ASHP, and the recipient of numerous awards. During his visit, Zilz shared his insight into evolving trends in the healthcare workforce and public health in presentations, group discussions and one-on-one meetings with residents, faculty members and students.
